Change of School Uniforms Policy

School Uniforms are no Longer needed
All students are expected to adhere to D-11 Dress Code policy at all times.

Over the last few months, many of you have participated in the conversation around the school uniform policy at McAuliffe. From surveys to in-person discussions during PTA, building leadership, and school accountability committee meetings, it has been great to dialogue with so many of you.

From these conversations we identified risks and rewards for both having uniforms and not having uniforms. Our community discussed financial impacts, student social interactions, self-expression, school pride, and impact on learning. We recognized that regardless of the decision made students would need to be held to the decided upon dress code in order to be positive and effective.

Based on all of this input I recommended to Superintendent Gaal that McAuliffe not continue with the uniform policy for the 2023-2024 school year. After discussing the process, reasons, and community support, he agreed with this recommendation. Our updated dress code policy will be worked on over the summer with the student dress code outlined in the D11 board policy being the foundation, but we will no longer require uniforms.

Thank you to everyone for engaging in this process with us. We recognize that this change will excite many of you and disappoint many at the same time. If you have any questions on the process, specific elements discussed, or next steps, please reach out to me.
